Why Tankless Calls Are Different

Tankless water heater service calls have grown significantly as the installed base expanded. The diagnostic approach combines gas pressure, ignition, combustion, and venting β€” but with the added complexity of flow-based activation and condensate management on combi units.

Navien and Rinnai are the two most common brands in residential service, and both publish detailed fault code documentation that makes systematic diagnosis straightforward once you know where to look.

Navien: Most Common Fault Codes

E003 β€” Ignition Failure: Before looking at the igniter or gas valve, check gas supply pressure during a flow event with a manometer. Navien units require minimum 3.5β€³ WC natural gas or 8.0β€³ WC propane during operation. An undersized gas line or failing regulator causes E003 under load but normal pressure at rest. Also check the condensate drain β€” a blocked drain triggers a secondary pressure switch that interrupts the ignition sequence.

E012 β€” Flame Loss During Operation: The burner lit but went out mid-cycle. Primary causes: fluctuating gas pressure, dirty flame sensor (clean with fine steel wool), or a flue restriction causing combustion products to recirculate.

E016/E030 β€” Exhaust/Intake Fault: Check coaxial vent for obstructions, verify installation didn't exceed maximum equivalent vent length (each 90Β° elbow = 5 ft equivalent), and check that the vent wasn't installed with a negative pitch that allows condensate pooling.

Rinnai: Most Common Fault Codes

11 β€” No Ignition: Same sequence as Navien E003 β€” check gas pressure during operation first. Rinnai's minimum is also 3.5β€³ WC natural gas.

12 β€” Flame Failure: Check the flame rod sensor and wire connection. Rinnai flame rods corrode with age β€” a white powdery coating is normal, but pitting or cracking requires replacement.

16 β€” Overheating: The heat exchanger reached the high-limit temperature. Check for scale buildup β€” hard water areas cause significant calcium carbonate scaling that reduces heat transfer. Descaling with white vinegar or commercial descaler is typically needed every 1–3 years in hard water areas.

52/61 β€” Neutralizer/Drain Faults: Condensate drain blocked. Clear and re-pitch the drain line.
